Hiking Gear in New Zealand

Q: Hello, I’m coming to New Zealand for a few months and would love to do some hiking while I’m there. I love Lord of the Rings and it would be awesome to walk around some of these beautiful places. But not too sure what I should pack, I’m a city girl and the hiking thing is still a bit new to me. Can I get hiking gear in New Zealand? Or Should I bring my own stuff? Thank you. – Amy, USA

“First time hiking in New Zealand”

Hi Amy, glad to hear you are a fellow Lord of the Rings fan. New Zealand and its many great walks will defiantly be the place for you. No matter that you’re a city girl, if you have a love for the outdoors and a sense of adventure you will absolutely love your time in New Zealand.

On your trip here I wound recommend checking out ‘Mt. Doom’ amongst the many other great walks in New Zealand. Just remember that “One does not simply walk into Mordor” preparation is required but it is simple enough to hike there. It can be found in the middle of the North Island, where you will find three volcanoes, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu. You will most definitely recognize Ngauruhoe as ‘Mt. Doom’ in the Lord of the Rings, with many other scenes shot around the area as well.

“Hiking Gear in New Zealand is Expensive!!”

If you are coming to New Zealand from the states, I would highly recommend that you buy your hiking gear there. Unfortunately, New Zealand is very expensive when it comes to outdoor gear in general. Also remember to test and break in you gear before going on a major hike. New Zealand weather can be very unpredictable, think four seasons in one day type of weather.

“Remember to work by the multi-layer principle for the changing weather”

I would start with a good pair of hiking boots, most brands would be cheaper to purchase in your neck of woods. Depending on the time of the year your coming, a good backpack, a rain jacket and pack cover is a must, also recommend rain paints, a pack liner and even a poncho.

It can also get very cold, always remember to work by the multi-layer principle for the changing weather and be ready to adapt to the cold, wind and rain. Last essential advice I would give you is to always let people know where you are going and when you expect to reach your destination. Hike with a partner if you can and Enjoy!
